If you’re getting married (uhm, CONGRATULATIONS!!), you’ve probably already been reeling in your head whether you and your partner want a first look or not. While some couples definitely are solid on their desires in this area, there are definitely pros and cons of having a first look! As a full-time elopement and intimate wedding photographer, I’ve come to know the ins-and-outs of both sides. So if you’re ready to finally make a decision on this part of wedding planning, I gotchu!
Although I’m typically photographing elopements and intimate weddings, I’ve had plenty of experience capturing larger, traditional weddings. These kind of weddings typically include a first look to allow for more time throughout the day. (However, they are not always needed!) Just as each wedding is unique, each wedding timeline is unique. Not having a large wedding? No worries! If you want a first look at your elopement, you absolutely can. Okay, now I promise I’m ready to share the pros and cons 😅
Pros of Having a First Look:
More Time Together. The first thing that comes to mind when looking at the pros of having a first look would be that you get to spend all day with your person! After all, you’re marrying them. Odds are that you actually would like to enjoy your time together!
More Time to Party. By seeing one another before the ceremony, you’re able to knock out group photos ahead of time! Which means: more time to PARTY after the “I do’s”.
No “Sneaking Around”. This one might be a personal preference, but a big pro of having a first look is that you don’t have to make a big effort ‘avoiding’ one another.
Epic Photo Opportunities. Pointing back to the second point, by taking photos earlier in the day, you’ll have the chance to travel a bit or search out fun spots for photos (if you want).

Pros of a Not Having a First Look:
Alexis + Chase opted out of having a first look since they were spending all day together during the second day of their wedding weekend. Instead, they spend some quality time with their family + wedding party getting ready! See more from their sweet day HERE.
Special Ceremony. I’m not saying that if you have a first look, you won’t have a special ceremony. However, if you’re picturing that moment of walking down the aisle and your partner seeing you for the first time, it may not be as “emotional” as if you had waited!
Keeping to Tradition. If tradition is important to you, opting out of a first look may be the way to go. Traditionally, couples would wait to see one another until the ceremony.
Creates Suspense. Similarly to the first pro of not having a first look, you will get to have the utmost suspense leading up to that moment you walk down the aisle.
Hannah + Connor decided to go for a traditional wedding, and saw each other for the first time as Hannah walked down the aisle.
Whatever you and your partner decide to do for your wedding or elopement, I want to encourage you to make your decision for you. Don’t worry if your mom, sister-in-law, or bestie doesn’t agree with your decision – it’s you and your partners’ choice. Now that you’ve weighed the pros and cons of having a first look, you’re all set! Happy wedding planning, friend.
