When it comes to your wedding day, you already know that it’s a special and exciting occasion. If you and your partner are adventure enthusiasts, you may choose to make your celebration even more exciting. Hiking on your wedding/elopement day can be a unique and memorable experience. But much like every other detail of your big day, extra planning and preparation is needed to ensure it goes off without a hitch. As an elopement and intimate wedding photographer (and outdoor enthusiast), I’ve spent my fair share of time perfecting the classic “elopement hike”. So here are my top 9 tips for hiking on your wedding day.
Hiking on Your Elopement Day
Wear comfortable + appropriate footwear
Choosing the right footwear is crucial for a safe and comfortable hiking experience. We’ve all been on a hike where our feet our aching before, right? The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable while exploring on your wedding day. Pro Tip: spend some time breaking in your boots or shoes wayyyy before your big day!
Pack lightly
Look, I get it. You might be tempted to bring everything and anything you think you might need. But I promise if you pack lightly, you’ll have a much more enjoyable experience. While you certainly don’t have to, many couples choose to hike in their wedding attire (hello, photo op). And I don’t know if you’ve tried your dress on for a long period of time yet, but that sucker gets heavy!
Bring extra snacks + water
Staying hydrated and fueled is important on any hike, but especially on your wedding day! Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy levels up. Even leading up to your big day, it’s important to nourish your body. Pro Tip: LiquidIVs are your best friend.
Pack layers
Weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to pack layers to be prepared for any changes in temperature. Consider bring a waterproof jacket, a hat, and gloves.
Prepare for the season
Do you need spikes? YakTraks? Trekking poles? Hand warmers? A change of clothes if it’s hot? Whether you’re hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, through the desert, or your local state park, make sure you know what the conditions can be.
Don’t forget a change of socks!
I take this one very seriously! It’s easy to underestimate the importance of dry socks on a hike. Pack an extra pair of socks in case your feet get wet or sweaty. You never know if you’ll be walking through a creek or if some snow will melt through your shoes.
Take frequent breaks
People say “your wedding day flies by”. And they aren’t lying. I want to encourage you to take your time on your hike; don’t rush through it. Take frequent breaks to enjoy the scenery and reflect. After all, it’s your wedding day!!
Know how to pack your attire
Like I mentioned, not every couple chooses to wear their wedding attire while hiking. So if you’re packing it, you need to make sure you know how to properly pack it. The best way to pack a wedding dress is to roll it up in a waterproof bag. And for a suit? It’s best to strap it to the back of the backpack (and the photos look awesome). And hey, you’ll get some fun looks from people you meet on the trail – it’s not everyday you see formal attire on the mountain.
Bring those extra “essentials”
While I definitely suggest packing lightly, make sure to leave some room for those little extra things you don’t typically bring on a hike. You might need a hairbrush, extra bobbi pins, hairspray, lipstick, etc. All you need is a little cosmetic bag and you’ll be set!
