Choosing an outfit to be photographed in is not an easy task. You need to be comfortable and feel like yourself, while also making sure that your outfit choice will photograph well. I have compiled a series of photos and recommendations to help with your outfit choices for any session in any season.
Winter engagement photos are so underrated. The white snow makes for a beautiful backdrop while also acting as a light diffuser. The challenging part with winter engagement photos is knowing what colors to wear and how to layer in order to avoid being uncomfortable. Below you will find some engagement session outfit ideas for winter shoots.
For every season, I always recommend solid colors and neutral tones like cream, black, grey, olive green, brown, and denim. However, the most important thing is that you feel like yourself and that you are comfortable in what you are wearing, otherwise it will show!
During winter months, it is fun to add a pair of boots, hats, mittens, and even your winter coats and warm attire. Layer a vest for extra warmth.
Tip: Put hand warmers in your pockets and your boots!
Spring can be tricky for photos. In Minnesota, it is usually muddy, things are just starting to bloom, and there is not a ton of sunshine. Below I have placed some of my favorite spring engagement outfits! I like to encourage a bit of color because of the bloom, and I try to do most of my sessions in the morning to catch the sunshine!
Many clients end up choosing one light colored/bright outfit like white, cream, and grey. For their other outfit, they may choose denim and a bright sweater, or a light colored sundress.
Also, peep the campfire! Campfire sessions are super fun and great if you are into camping. Again, make sure you are comfortable!
Probably the most classic engagement session season. Summer sessions are great for sunset and warm tones, along with being next to the water if you are into that! I recommend dresses, sandals, and colors like cream, light pink, grey, olive green, and black.
Summer engagements can also be tricky, however, as you don’t want to be hot and sweaty (Minnesota summers can be humid and brutal). Light, flowy dresses are a great option for comfort and class. If you are not a dress person, try denim shorts and a cute top!
My favorite season for photos because the colors in Minnesota are PHENOMENAL! In the fall, I recommend warm colors to match the changing leaves. Specifically, I suggest grey, black, dark orange, maroon, olive green, navy, and denim. Couples may go for an adventurous look with jackets, or a classic look with a dress. Many of my couples choose sweaters and denim for comfort, as we may end up hiking around!
That’s it folks! The most important thing to remember for your engagement session in any season: make sure you are comfortable, and wear something that is natural for YOU! I always tell couples that if they show up in something that they would not normally wear, their photos will reflect that!
