So you’re planning your elopement, huh? CONGRATULATIONS!! There’s just something about planning the day that is all about you and your honey. If you’ve found yourself here, it means you’re thinking about eloping in Glacier National Park (good choice!). From the dramatic landscapes, crystal blue glacial lakes, endless hikes, and more… It’s no wonder that GNP is the ultimate place to elope. I’m so excited to have put together the ultimate guide to eloping in Glacier National Park so that you have a “one-stop-shop” kind of resource to reference as you plan your elopement. Let’s dive in!

The Ultimate Guide to Eloping in Glacier National Park

Step #1: Pick a Season or Date

I’m a firm believer that there is no inopportune time to elope in Montana. Each season offers endless activities and opportunities to take in Big Sky Country. 

• Spring offers new life with the blooming flowers, melting snow, and the opportunity to explore without large crowds. 
• Summer brings warmer temperatures, more wildlife, and even more trails to explore (but you might be battling some larger crowds. 
• Fall in Glacier National Park can be somewhat unpredictable, but worth it 10 times over. The coloring leaves are just unbeatable. 
• Winter is perfect for all the snow lovers out there. The fluffy snow is perfect for hitting the slopes, snowshoeing, or cozying up in a cabin.

Step #2: Hire Your “Must Have” Vendors

Vendors that book up quickly are typically photographers, videographers, and coordinators. Now, I don’t only mention this because I am a full-time elopement and intimate wedding photographer in Montana. But these vendors are truly the experts that can help you organize and plan your elopement. These vendors will be able to give you their list of preferred vendors, help nail down a timeline for your elopement day, and even find accommodations. 

Step #3: Decide on the Guest List

I know what you’re thinking, “Guest list?! It’s an elopement!” But your elopement can look however you want it to. Whether you choose to include your family or not, be sure to give it some thought. I have a TON of tips on Including Your Family on Your Elopement Day here! 

Step #4: Decide on a Location + Secure a Permit

When you think about eloping in GNP, it can be a little bit overwhelming trying to decide where you want to say “I do” within the park. There are 5 districts within the park that are filled with epic locations for you to tie the know. Be sure to research the different areas, restrictions, and limitations within each district to ensure you choose the best fit. Having a permit in Glacier National Park is one of the most important pieces of information I can provide. Without a permit, you will not be able to say your vows amongst the towering peaks and alpine lakes. The park requires you to have a permit because they only allow ceremonies in certain locations. However, you can take portraits elsewhere. As soon as you nail down a location, apply for your permit as soon as possible; their response time can take more than a month. Remember to remain flexible.

Step #5: Select Your Activities

Believe it or not, your elopement day doesn’t just have to be you and your honey getting married (although, that is the main attraction). I’ve had the honor of capturing my fair share of elopements; my job reaches far beyond just telling your love story. Step #6: Secure Lodging

Montana offers lodging for every kind of elopement you could imagine. From lodges to airbnbs to campgrounds, there are plenty of great places to stay near Glacier National Park!

Step #7: Hire Other Vendors

Once you’ve nailed down dates, locations, times, etc., it’s time to hire your other vendors. Your photographer, videographer, or coordinator can recommend others in the industry. But other resources include WeddingWire.com or TheKnot.com. For Montana specific, visit Montanabride.com.

Step #8: Get Legal

I know, I know. Get legal?! You’ve already secured your permit for your ceremony, but now you gotta make sure your MARRIAGE is legal! You must apply in the county in which you are getting married. You can apply as soon as just under 6 months for your license online. Read more on Getting Legal here. 

You can also choose to just have a commitment ceremony in Montana and get legally married elsewhere. Make sure you look up the requirements for your state!

Step #9: Gear Up!

Depending on what season you plan to elope in, and what activities you decide to embark on, you’ll need different kinds of gear. My biggest tip is to come prepared; you’ll be ready for any situation that comes your way. 3. Trekking poles
4. Extra socks
5. Wedding attire
6. Bear spray

Step #10: Leave No Trace

It is super important that we leave the park better than we found it. It is truly a blessing that we are able to use these incredible public lands for YOUR elopement! I urge you to stay on the designated trails and minimize your environmental impacts while using the land.
